Regulatory requirement & practical control
Anti-Money Laundering Training Must Be Ongoing, Relevant and Documented.
Anti-money laundering training is a core compliance control. EU AML/CFT rules require obliged entities to ensure that relevant employees receive ongoing training that helps them recognise activity that may be related to money laundering or terrorist financing and understand how to respond.
The current EU framework requires risk-proportionate staff awareness and ongoing training. Regulation (EU) 2024/1624 strengthens this approach by expressly requiring training to be appropriate to employees' functions and to the AML/CFT risks of the obliged entity, and to be duly documented. The Regulation applies from 10 July 2027.
For regulated and higher-risk businesses, generic awareness training is often insufficient. Effective programmes should reflect the products, customer journey, transaction flows, jurisdictions and internal escalation procedures employees actually work with.
What effective AML training should do
→Explain the AML/CFT obligations relevant to each role
→Build recognition of red flags and suspicious behaviour
→Connect KYC/KYB, EDD, monitoring and escalation in practice
→Reflect the firm's policies, procedures and risk model
→Address sector-specific payment, FinTech or sector-specific risks
→Create documented evidence of attendance and completion
Training frequency is not universally fixed at once per year. The appropriate cadence depends on applicable law, risk, role, regulatory change and the organisation's operating model.
Who the training is for

Common questions
AML/CFT Training — Frequently Asked Questions.
Is AML/CFT training a regulatory requirement in the EU?
+
Yes. Under Article 46 of Directive (EU) 2015/849, obliged entities must ensure relevant employees participate in ongoing AML/CFT training. Regulation (EU) 2024/1624 further requires specific, ongoing, role-appropriate and documented training and applies from 10 July 2027.
Who should receive AML/CFT training?
+
Training should be proportionate to the employee’s role and exposure to money-laundering and terrorist-financing risk. Depending on the business, this may include management, compliance and MLRO teams, KYC/KYB and onboarding staff, transaction-monitoring teams, customer-facing staff, operations and other relevant personnel.
How often should AML training be delivered?
+
EU law requires ongoing training, but it does not impose one universal annual frequency for every business. Training frequency should reflect applicable national law, the firm’s risk profile, staff responsibilities and material regulatory or operational changes. Periodic refresher training is commonly used to maintain current knowledge.
Can AML/CFT training be tailored to FinTech, payment or other regulated businesses?
+
Yes. Training can be tailored to the regulated activity, jurisdiction, products, customer types and risk profile, with modules for payment institutions and EMIs, FinTech businesses, CASPs and other digital-asset businesses.
Do participants receive a certificate?
+
A certificate of completion can be issued for completed training. The certificate and attendance records may form part of the firm’s internal evidence that training was delivered, but they do not constitute regulatory approval or certification by a supervisory authority.
Can AML training cover our internal policies and procedures?
+
Yes. Custom training can be aligned with the organisation’s own AML/CFT policies, escalation routes, customer-risk model, KYC/KYB procedures, transaction-monitoring controls and internal reporting process.
